Overview
The value of global cryptocurrency market is estimated at $2.3 trillion as at Dec. 2021.
Cryptocurrency, in simple terms, is a digital or virtual currency based on decentralized system (blockchain or distributed ledger) and cryptography, making it difficult to counterfeit or double-spend. Bitcoin(BTC) is the original cryptocurrency launched in 2009; since then, there several other cryptocurrencies on the market.
The most important feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are not issued by any central authority, like how the bank of Ghana issues Ghana Cedis, making cryptocurrency independent, and governments cannot interfere or manipulate it.
